What is TSPC?

Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities

Subject Leader: Mrs L Smyth

Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities (TSPC) are at the heart of the Northern Ireland Curriculum and are developed within each class through all learning areas. Teachers have the role of developing pupils' life skills and capabilities for society. TSPC is divided into 5 strands.

The infusion approach is the main strategy for developing thinking skills. It is best summed up as an approach that “introduces into one thing a second thing which gives it extra life, vigour and a new significance”. TSPC is infused throughout all areas of learning where all children are developing and improving skills for life.

Thinking skills are tools that help children to go beyond the acquisition of knowledge to search for meaning, apply ideas, analyse patterns and relationships, create and design something new and monitor and evaluate their progress.
