At Cumran Cubs, we believe that the best learning happens through play. Our daily activities help children build creativity, confidence, and essential skills, all while having fun. Both indoors and outdoors, we explore, discover and grow. We also take time to understand each other, fostering friendships and emotional intelligence, so that every child feels supported and valued. With a focus on kindness and cooperation, we create a positive environment where learning and growth come naturally. In line with our motto, we look up and aim high.
To start our new school year, we had a special time learning 'All About Me'— exploring what we like, what we don’t like, and how we feel. Through fun activities and discussions, the children learned to recognize and talk about their emotions, helping them better understand themselves and each other. We also introduced some important school routines, like lining up and walking through the corridors. It’s been a wonderful way to help the children feel more comfortable in their new school environment, while also building important social skills and confidence.
At Cumran Cubs, we have been exploring our 5 senses through lots of exciting sensory activities. The children enjoyed going on sensory walks, where they used their hands to do tree rubbings and their eyes to spot tiny details with magnifying glasses. The listening game was very interesting as some of the Cubs were more aware of specific sounds than others and we had quite a giggle at some of the sounds. They also enjoyed tasting and smelling different fruits and vegetables, discovering new flavours and textures. It’s been a fun and engaging way to learn how we experience the world around us, all while developing curiosity and a love for exploration!
Cumran Cubs, along with the whole school, celebrated European Day of Languages. As you will see from the photographs, we focused on Scotland and tried on some traditional Scottish kilts. The Cubs also enjoyed making and eating some delicious Scottish shortbread. To finish the day, the Cubs joined forces with Year 5 (who were also focusing on Scotland) and completed a mini Highland Games with toss the welly boot, roll the log and, of course, a Scottish jig.
During Maths Week, we had a fantastic time exploring shapes! The children enjoyed identifying shapes in the world around us, sorting them, and even printing with them to create colourful patterns. We also had some fun with numbers, singing '1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Once I Caught a Fish Alive' using scarves outside, and playing number games up to 5. It was a week full of hands-on learning, helping the children develop a strong foundation in math through play and creativity!
